Full Description

{1} Statue. Mid C18. Attributed to Henry Cheere (Pevsner). Statuary marble. Life-size statue of Sir George Cooke with right arm supporting head and leaning on triangular plinth decorated with swags, and bucrania to angles. Holding an open book in left hand from which he is reading. Right leg crossed. The pose is derived from that of Gulfi's statue of James Cragg in Westminster Abbey. Tall base has bowed panels to sides that to front with commemorative inscription reliefs with putti either side. That to left side shows cherubs in a court of justice, that to right cherubs in a library. Base is raised on 2 steps. Removed from Harefield Hall. Sir George Cooke of Harefield Middlesex died 1740.
