Full Description

{1} Farmhouse. Mid C18. Coursed ironstone rubble, reed thatch roof, brick end stacks on stone bases. 3-unit plan. 2-storey, 3-window range. Central C20 part-glazed door with moulded wood surround and hood on brackets. C19 quartered sash windows to ground floor and 1st floor with stone lintels and keyblocks. Band of dressed ironstone at level of heads of ground floor windows, quoins, and stone-coped gables with kneelers. Interior has stone-flagged floors, ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams and winder stair.

{3} The farmhouse was assessed in order to place the barns in their physical and historical context. It appears to date from the mid C18th, and is built of coursed ironstone rubble with a reed thatched roof. It is of three bays and two storeys. The central doorway now has a C20th part-glazed door, and the windows have stone lintels and keyblocks containing C19th quartered sash windows on the first floor and casements on the ground floor. The walls have a band of dressed ironstone at the level of the heads of the ground floor windows, quoins and stone-coped gables with kneelers. The wall height has been increased by several courses of brickwork.
There is clear evidence of a blocked doorway to the east of the main front door, and blocked window openings on the west gable and the rear (south) wall of the house. A former tenant believes that the house was built c.1740 and that there were originally two staircases, one at each end of the building. This arrangement suggests that the present building may originally have been two cottages which were converted to a single house in the latter part of the C18th.
