Summary

Home Farm farmhouse in Moreton Pinkey is a Grade II listed building dating to the mid-17th century, constructed in coursed limestone and ironstone rubble with later 18th-19th century alterations. Originally fronting northeast toward the farmyard, it was reoriented and expanded with a dairy/kitchen and baren, reflecting its evolution from a simple rural dwelling to a more complex farmstead.

{4} A level 2 Historic Building Recording was undertaken at three main structures: the main farmhouse, a dairy/kitchen structure, and a small barn attached to the northwest gable of the main farmhouse. The earliest phase is the construction of the farmhouse, which ocurred in the 17th century, as indicated by the architectural features such as the chamferred wooden beams with curved step stops. The farmhouse was originally orientiated to the northeast, facing toward the farmyard with the main entrance located in the centre of the elevation. Following this, probably during the 18th century the dairy/kitchen structure wa built as a separate self-contained building. Given the similarity in building materials the barn was likely constructed during the same period. The ground floor opening in the northwest elevation of the farmhouse was likley blocke at this point with the barn constructed against the elevation.

At some point, probably in the later 18th century, a significant change of use occurred. What was the kitchen in the main farmhouse became the snug. A number of features within the room relating to this change - panelling around the fire place and the insertion of the wooden screen - date to this period. The kitchen at this point presumably relocated to its current location and it seems likely that the structure linking the two buildings was constructed then as well. The widening of the kitchen end of the building (and the associated changing of the pitch of the roof) may also have occurred at this time. Based on the cartographic evidence all these major changes had occurred by the 1880s.
