Full Description

{1} Cottage. C17/C18. Coursed rubble (whitewashed), thatch roof, central brick stack. One storey and attic, 3 bays. Doorway in left bay has wood lintel and C20 glazed door. 2-light casement window to right with wood lintel. Similar 3-light window in right bay. 2-light casement window in attic. All windows have old iron casements and leaded lights. Interior not inspected.

{3}Old Wall and Old Shop were revealed to have been formerly one building. The medieval building was 4 bay, with three rooms. The house was constructed at some time in the 15th century. The building possibly replaced an earlier period of occupation at the site. The central two bays contained the hall which was dominated by a raised cruck truss constructed from two cranked elbowed, boughs of oak. These were tied together with a collar about one third down the pitch of the roof and a lower beam situated just above head height. There was no evidence of a louvre over the central hearth, indicating smoke dispersal through the thatch.

The timberwork at the east end of the hall was finer than that of the central truss and included sawn timbers. This may indicate the position of the higher end and solar. The first floor was supported on a spine beam spanning between the two side walls.

There is no surviving evidence for the form of windows and doors of the building.
