Full Description

{1} Stables. c.1740. Squared coursed limestone, ashlar dressings, artificial stone slate roof. U-plan. One storey and attic, 7 bays. Pedimented centre- piece with clock. 3 entrances with double plank doors. Sash window on either side. End bays project and have doorways with plain stone frames, overlights and 6-panel doors. Arched loft openings, above doorways.

[3} Of C-shaped plan, the stables consist of a central three-bay coach house flanked by recessed two bay stables with single bay wings projecting forward enclosing the stables and coach house courtyard. The central three-bay coach house is pedimented. The external walls consist of coursed and roughly squared ashlar stonework with stone quoins at the corners and plain stone surrounds to the windows. There is a parapet to the north elevation. The roof coverings consist of sand faced concrete tiles. In the central cupola hangs a bell which is dated 1735.

Much altered, both during the 19th century and when the hall was in institutional use.

The 1887 Sale Particulars include the following description: 'There is accomodation for 12 horses as follows:- Four-stall stable, stable of 2 loose boxes, ditto, ditto, 1 stable of 3 loose boxes, with a single stall for sick horse, washing boxes, 3 coach houses, harness room, extensive hay loft, 5 good bed rooms for grooms and coachman's cottage (fomerly laundry) containing 5 rooms'
