Summary

Shop and house. Late C18/early C19. Painted and rendered brick, slate roof, brick end and ridge stacks. 239 Watling Street was formerly the Admiral Nelson Public House from at least 1804, the Nelson's Arms from 1813 until 1917, now Greens Antiques.

Full Description

{1} Shop and house. Late C18/early C19. Painted and rendered brick, slate roof, brick end and ridge stacks. 3-unit plan. 2 storeys and attic; 4-window range. C20 door to left of centre with overlight and pilastered wood surround flanked by canted bay windows with moulded wood cornice carried over door as hood. Carriage arch to right of centre with timber lintel. C20 door to right of arch and canted bay window to far right with moulded wood cornice carried over door as hood. 12-pane sash windows to first floor with wood lintels. Interior has chamfered spine beams.

{2} Shop and house, late 18th/early 19th century. 3-unit plan. 2 storeys and attic; 4 window range. Carriage arch.

{3} Building survey was undertaken of 239 Watling Street as part of the wider Historic Towcester Survey. Ceiling beams exposed on the ground floor have deep flat splays and a projecting wall plate suggesting that the building could date from the late 16th century. The offset carriage entrance is known to have existed as early as 1855. The building was a public house (known as the Admiral Nelson and later the Nelson's Arms) from at least 1804 until WWII.
