Summary

Late 17th century manor house. The early 17th Century hall is the earliest surviving portion, retained as the central element in an H-plan house built in the last quarter 17th Century. The building was modernised circa 1830.

Full Description

{1} Manor house. Mid/late C17. Coursed dressed ironstone, plain-tile hipped roof, stone ridge stack, blue brick lateral stacks, that to right on stone base. H-plan. 2 storeys and attic; 3-window range. Central part-glazed door in moulded wood surround with timber lintel and timber porch. Above is a 3-light chamfered stone mullion leaded window with hood mould. Similar 4-light windows to ground and first floors of wings, those to ground floor with hood moulds. Blocked 1-light windows to ground and first floors of inner sides of wings with double-chamfered stone surrounds and hood moulds. Two 2-light flat-faced stone mullion cellar windows to right wing. Chamfered stone plinth and eaves. Stone ridge stack has 4 square stone flues with chamfered bases and moulded tops. Hipped roof dormers. Attached garden wall to left encloses garden on road side and has ridged stone coping. Interior has stop-chamfered spine beams, and C17 open-well cantilevered timber staircase with fat turned balusters and ball finials. Staircase rises from ground floor to attic and has splat balusters to top landing. A portion of panelling with strapwork from former Long Gallery at top of house hangs on staircase. Another staircase in hall, probably late C18, with stick balusters, ramped and wreathed handrail and carved tread ends. One room has C17 pegged panelling. Spice cupboard with labelled drawers in kitchen.
