Full Description

{1} Late C17th, altered late C18th/early C19th and mid/late C19th. RH rainwater head dated 1783, other dated 1873. Stucco front, stone back and side elevations. 2 storeys and attics. Welsh slated roof with modillioned cornice, 2 gabled dormers. 1st floor has 2 sashs windows in architrave surrounds and 2 small later sashs windows. Later projecting flat roofed shops. Interior: mainly mid/late C19th; chamfered beams in cellar; two panelled 1st floor rooms to front.

{2} Late C17th; late C18th/early C19th alterations; stucco front; stone otherwise; 2 storeys & attics; slate roof; later projecting flat-roofed shops (now demolished!);

{3-4} The house was owned by a Mr Gates in the late 18th century and at this date had projecting wings to the north and south as well as extensive pleasure grounds. This house, along with the house to the south owned by Mr Hughes, was appropriated in 1843 by the magistrates as part of new regulations compelling the county to enlarge the old gaol or build a new one. The south wing was demolished and the new county gaol built in the former gardens to the rear. The house was occupied by the Chief Constable and his deputy; part of it was used for the reception of suspects.
