Full Description

{1} 1913 by J A Gotch in Neoclassical style. Ashlar, of Weldon stone with low pitched roof behind parapet. Single storey on rusticated base. No windows, Roman Doric order with half-columns in centre of side elevation framing entrance arch in rusticated chamfered voussoir with carved keystone. Pairs of columns on either end of front raised panels and wreaths with garlands. Public Library, Art Gallery, Alfred East Monument and Dryland Fountain form a group.

{2} Built in 1913 by J.A. Gotch in Neoclassical style. Single storey.

{3} Albert East Art Gallery. Opened in 1913 to display a range of the works collected by Sir Alfred East. Building of classical design. Attached to the public library as a separate wing. Erected as a memorial to Alfred East. Sign above front door 'Labore et Amore' The building is listed. Film 2, photo 3, 7.

{4} Built 1913 to design of local architect J.A.Gotch. The building is constructed in ashlar Weldon Stone in the classical style and is, properly for an art gallery, windowless. The south elevation with its central, arched entrance, overlooks ornamental gardens whence access to Sheep Street is gained by an imposing flight of steps adjoining the gallery wall.

{5} The public library and Alfred East Art Gallery together form the beginning of an effort towards a Civic Centre.
