Full Description

{1} C18. Ashlar dressed coursed squared rubble, Welsh slated roof. 2 storeys L plan, 1st floor band. Sash windows with glazing bars under stone lintels. Segmentally arched carriageway on left, similar coach doorway on right. Stone mounting block with 5 steps and dog kennel underneath. Barton Seagrave Hall, Orangery and Outbuildings form a group.

{5} A level 3 building recording survey was undertaken of the former stable block prior to conversion to hotel accommodation and a leisure spa. Documentary evidence suggests that the east range is the earlier range, although this was difficult to prove conclusively. However, the carpentry and decorative character of the tie-beams and (what is left of) the trusses in the east range is certainly earlier and may even suggest a grander, domestic origin for the range. The north range is almost entirely of a mid-late 19th-century date. Along with a similar date for the stables stalls in the east range it seems likely that the whole block was thoroughly reonvated in this period.
