{8} The Barn
The building is rectangular in plan, orientated east-west, constructed from coursed limestone rubble with dressed limestone quoins. The roof is gabled under stone slates, with various glass skylights throughout.
North elevation : This elevation has a projecting pitch-hole at eaves level, with gabled roof under stone slates. Below this is a row of four stone ventilation holes and to the right is the covered cart entrance this has a heavy timber lintel, fitted with large planked wooden doors which gives access to rear yard.
South elevation : This elevation comprises of a pair of mismatched double span doors, the larger in the centre of the elevation and the other to the left has 5 fanlights above a painted timber lintel. There is also evidence of a sliding barn door from the central door to the left, where is partly obscures a tall rectangular fixed casement of 4-lights. In the centre of the elevation at eaves level there is a square pitched-hole which is boarded up with contemporary material.
West elevation : This is under the covered cart entrance and has a square fixed casement window of 6-light and slender glazing bars, under a painted timber lintel. The window is a later addition, an alteration to the former doorway, evidence of which is seen in a bricked up portion of the wall below in red brick.
East elevation : At loft hight it has a mullioned stone window of 3-lights
Barn Ground floor : the interior area has a poured concrete floor with an area of a cobbled surface to the east of the room and evidence of a former stalling for a horse. There is also a brick lined gulley running east west through the centre and a stone drain cover. The wall are a mixture of exposed stone, painted stone and brick and patches of lime plaster. Evidence of horse related storage on the west wall and some on the east wall. Double span entrance central to the south wall. The ceiling is painted pit-sawn timber, the two beams present have stop chamfers indicating that they are most likely original.
Barn Loft : The inspection of the loft was limited due to unsafe access and fragile lime/reed floor.
The stable range: Is linear in plan form, orientated north south, constructed from coursed limestone rubble with dressed limestone quoins and decorative limestone kneelers. The roof is gabled, and of a steep pitch under stone slates with various glass skylights. This section of report also comments on the interior gardener's storage, the gardener's office and the loft area above.
South extension : Built on the south gable of the stable range. Made from coursed limestone rubble with dressed limestone quoins, door and window jambs. Poorer quality then those through the barn and stable block.
