{4}Victoria Inn, West Street
Building shown on the maps as 'public house' later 'Oundle antiques' and now private residence. Stone construction. The building was originally the early workhouse for the town and was re-named in 1837 - the year of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne. Film 1, photo 1. (1)
Parish Workhouse, West Street
The workhouse had been purchased in 1720 as a way of reducing the cost of providing poor relief and thus reducing the size of the annual levy. 'The Town is eased of two Thirds of their Charge, and yet I assure you the Poor are provided for in a plentiful manner, and have everything necessary or convenient in Life' John Clifton.
Workhouse now on the site occupied by the Victoria Inn. The majority of structures have been demolished, but part of the workhouse is now an antiques shop and private house. This is where the master of the workhouse would have been likely to live. (1)
