Summary

Possible site of watermill recorded at Domesday in 1086. The mill was described in 1878 as having an undershot waterwheel and was still water powered in 1940. Now demolished.

Full Description

{1}Documentary evidence of a watermill at SP 88799468; standing in 1587;

{2}1886 first edition O.S. plan at 1:2:500 shows water mill named "Gretton Mill (corn)" straddling across the river. No trace of this during survey of area - but the land had been subject to recent river works.

{3} 1086 Domesday Survey gives Gretone with one mill rendering 3s.
1762 Robert Dunmere, miller and John Smeeton, milner sernt.
1878 Advertisement for proposed (but cancelled) sale of Winchelsea Estates included a water corn mill at Gretton with an undershot waterwheel driving two pairs of stones and a wire flour machine.
1940 John Whitworth still milling using only water power.

Site appears to have been obliterated by flood protection measures at river, involving extensive concrete work to accommodate weir.
