Summary

An early 17th century farmhouse situated on the northern side of Main Street that was altered circa 1800 and during the late 19th century. The building is constructed of regular and squared coursed limestone with double pitch Collyweston slate roofs in an L plan. The building has raised gable parapets with one urn finial and ashlar and brick chimney stacks at the gables and in the centre. The elevation to Main Street has a three window range of casements with ashlar dressings and a gable to the left. The gable has a four light ovolo moulded stone mullion window to the ground floor and a similar three light window above. The left return has an irregular three window range with casements to the left and centre and a three light stone mullion window to the right. The centre window has been inserted into a blocked doorway and has a small single light stair window to its right.

Full Description

Farmhouse. Early C17, c.1800 and later C19. Regular coursed and squared coursed limestone with Collyweston slate roof. Originally 2-unit plan with cross passage, at right angles to the road, now L-shaped. 2 storeys. Elevation abutting Main Street is a 3-window range with gable to left. 4-light, ovolo-moulded stone mullion window, with hood mould, to ground floor of gable and similar 3-light window above. C19 casement windows, to right, have ashlar dressings and wood lintels. Central, 4-panel, do r has a leaded casement, immediately above, both have ashlar dressings and wood lintels. Ashlar quoins and evidence of straight joint between gable and later range to right. Ashlar gable parapets with one urn finial at eaves, to left. Ashlar ridge and end stacks, to cross wing, has moulded corbelling. Yellow brick stack at end, to right. Elevation to left is an irregular 3-window range, at ground floor. 3-light, ovolo-moulded stone mullion, window, to right of centre. One first floor and 2-gr und floor windows are C19 casements under wood lintels. Single-light fire window with moulded stone surround, to ground floor centre. Mid/late C19 one-bay 2-storey extension, set back to left, has C19 casements. Rear elevation of both wings has C19 lean-to extensions with catslide roofs. Interior not inspected but north room of cross-wing noted as having a stop-chamfered spine beam, with stops defining the position of the former cross-passage. Rebuilt open fireplace and C17 fireplace at first floor with moulded stone surround with shelf and 4-centred arch-head. Reset C18 staircase with turned balusters and closed string.
