Full Description

{1}The castle barn was considered to be Jacobean was discovered to incorporate the remains of an aisled barn with notched lap joints dating from the 13th century. Whether the barn is contemporary with the contruction of the castle or dates from the period when Ramsey Abbey took the estate over in 1276 can not be asertained. It does, however, indicate that the castle had an outer ward or bailey on the east side which is the location of the lawn between the gatehouse and the manor house.

{2} Barn. C15/C16 origins altered C19. Squared coursed limestone with stone slate roof. Originally an aisled barn, now truncated. South elevation has central gablet with a 4-light stone mullion window in the apex. Ashlar gable parapets, kneelers and finials. C19 or early C20 cart entrance in right gable. Interior has remains of original roof structure with evidence of aisle construction. (Giggins, B.: unpublished research)
