Full Description

{1} Perimeter wall and gateway to Chichele College. C.1422, modified C19 and C20. Regular coursed and squared coursed limestone. C15 gateway has 2-centred head and moulded stone surround with decorated spandrels, in western section of wall. Attached foundations originally formed part of college buildings. The college was founded by Archbishop Henry Chichele. Forms perimeter wall to Chichele College with Chichele College, south and east ranges (q.v.) and forms group with Chichele College, north range (q.v.) and Chichele College, ground of foundations (q.v.). Chichele College is scheduled as an ancient monument and under the guardianship of the H.B.M.C.E. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.256).

{2} Perimeter wall and gateway to Chichele College. C. 1422, modified 19th and 20th centuries. 15th century gateway.

{3} The right range was the gatehouse and has a gateway with 4-centred head.

{5} An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the renovation of part of the western boundary wall and gateway of Chichele College, Higham Ferrers. Modern cement mortar and a fragment of probable 19th century brick were observed in the wall core on either side of the gateway. It was noted that the gateway to the wall was of similar design to the doorway of the north wall of the college building.
