Building record 1679/24/1 - No.35 (& 33?) High Street

Please read our .

Summary

No. 35 High Street is a substantial four bay house of two storeys and attics, probably dating from the early 18th century. It has a contemporary two-storey rear range at the south end, facing an unnamed lane to the south. The eastern half of this range has been raised slightly at a later date. It was extended by the addition of a further stone range, which may have been single storey originally. The upper floor appears always to have been well lit, with large windows to the south and east making its use as workshop accomodation for the boot and shoe trade plausible.

{4} No 35 High Street probably used as a workshop; no leather trades use has been certainly identified for this building, but is a possible example of the kind of workshop accommodation which may have characterised shoe manufacture or factoring prior to the introduction of factory working.
