Full Description
{1} During extensions to St Andrews Hospital in 1836 and 1837 a number of skeletons and grave goods were found. Five brooches, a spearhead, a knife, a fragment from a shield boss and six pots have survived and are in Northampton Museum. Two large square-headed brooches are probably of late 6th century date but Mryes suggests that one of the pots is more probably 5th century. It is not clear whether any of the pots contained or were associated with cremations.
{2} Three urns found with one or two brass coins of the Lower Empire. Signs of cremation met with in 1837.
{3} (SP 770605)) In digging for the foundations of the Lunatic Asylum (St Andrew's Hospital) in 1836, several skeletons were found; accompanying them were some bronze brooches. Three urns found, with one or two brass coins of the lower Empire, not perforated.
{4} Signs of cremation were met with in 1837 on the same site; also parts of 2 large square headed brooches found.
{8} Anglo Saxon cinerary urns, brooches, etc found on site of St Andrews Hospital. Specimens in Northampton.
