A mid 17th century house which was remodelled in the mid and late 18th century. It is of rendered lias and brick with a slate roof.

Full Description

{1} Inn, now house. Mid C17, remodelled mid and late C18. Rendered lias and brick with slate roof. 2-unit plan, originally larger. 3 storeys, 4-window range of sashes reducing at second floor, all with glazing bars. Moulded cornice and brick and stone stacks at ends. Single-unit, single-storey extension to left which formed part of larger house, has 6-panelled door with reeded wood doorcase and fanlight with glazing bars. C20 casement to left has moulded stone surround and mullion stubbs to inside face. Rendered wall attached to right with double gates has continuous moulded plinth with the house, indicating the original extent of the building. Rear of brick with C18 and C19 extensions. Interior: Entrance hall has large chamfered ceiling beam. Room to left has C17 fireplace with moulded stone surround and herringbone brick fireback. Late C18 staircase with 2 turned balusters per tread. Reputed to have originally been the manor house.

{4} The Talbot Inn, Welford, was formerly the manor-house of the Saunders family.

{5} Now known as Talbot House {7} the building has been extensively restored in recent years. It is mainly of 18th-20th century date but some thick walling and large timber beams may indicate an incorporated earlier building.
