Full Description

{1} Two houses. Mid C18 altered C19. Cob, brick and lias, now rendered, with slate roofs. Originally both of 2-unit plans. No.2 is single storey with attic; 3-window range of casements with glazing bars at ground floor, with dormer window to left. Central C20 door. Brick stacks at ends. Right gable rebuilt in brickwork. No.4 is 2 storeys; 4-window range of C20 casements. C19 roof with brick stacks at ends. C20 entrance at rear. Interior not inspected but No.2 reputed to have raised cruck construction. Included as examples of cob construction.

{3} Seaborne considered the cottage at Ravensthorpe to be the earliest example of a cob-buit structure in the county, possibly late 16th/early 17th century. The front wall, apparently wholly of mud, is two feet two inches thick [0.66m] set on a stone plinth two feet high. One of the gable walls has been faced with stone as has part of the rear wall. Internally, one of the roof trusses is a raised cruck with no tie beam. At least the eastern half of the cottage may have originally been of a single-storey with a central hearth.
