Full Description

{1} Country House. Late C18. Rendered brick with slate roof. Shallow U-shaped plan. 3 storeys. Main front: 7-window range, with end bays breaking forward. Sash windows with glazing bars, reducing at second floor level. Half glazed door to left of centre has C20 moulded wood doorcase. Hipped roof with brick stacks at ridge. Garden front on one-window range with C19 canted bay at ground level. C19 extensions to rear. Interior: not inspected but ground floor reception noted as having late C18 and earlier fireplaces.

{3} The earliest fabric is consistent with an early 18th or even late 17th century date. The house was considerably altered and extended in the later 19th century and has undergone extension in the late 20th century. The Hall is built in brick and most of the earlier work is coated in render. The main range is of three storeys with two-storey additions at the rear and a big late 20th century extension on the northern side. Roofs are mainly covered in Welsh slate and the main roof range is hipped with oversailing eaves.

Evidence for an earlier date than given in the list description is a stop chamfered beam in the dining room and a sketch by George Clarke of 1836, which depicts the house prior to the 19th century extensions. Clarke drew a 7-bay two-storey house with dormers and windows in the gables on the same footprint of the front of the existing house. Stylistically the overall composition is typical of small country houses of the later 17th and early 18th centuries.

{4} Undated photo;

{5} Dates to the late C17 or early C18, but fully rendered in the C19 when an extra storey was added.
