Summary

Full Description
{1} Country House, now Convent School. Late C18 by John Johnson. Squared coursed lias with ashlar dressings and lead and slate roof. Double-depth plan with pavilions. North front: 3 storeys, 7-window range of sashes and casements with glazing bars and flat arched heads, centre 5 bays break forward with canted bays. Central 2-storey porch and belvedere above of early C20; third floor also dates from this period. Shallow pitched roof not visible. Left pavilion: 2 storeys with attic, 3-window range of casements. Triple arcade at ground floor. Gabled roof with moulded pediment and central occulus. The right pavilion has been replaced by C20 extension. South front similar with moulded wood doorcase with columns and pediment. Interior: Fine C18 staircase to right of entrance with carved tread ends and wrought iron balustrade. Entrance hall has screens with detached columns. Bolection moulded fire surround in entrance hall and room to right of staircase. Ceilings to entrance hall and 2 rooms to right of entrance have oval centres with fruit and flower mouldings and moulded cornices. The C18 house has been altered by adding a further storey in the early C20 to both north and south fronts. (Buildings of England : Northamptonshire, p.374).

{6} Northamptonshire Grammar School since 1989. Much altered since the Second World War when an additional second was added. There had already been work by Law & Son in 1887 and an enlargement in 1898 by Law & Harris. A dormitory block was added by Walker & Sturgess, 1966.
