Full Description

{1} Dairy, now house. Late C18. Probably by H. Holland. Ashlar lias with C20 slate roof. 2 unit plan. 2 storeys with attic. Central C19 door with porch flanked by casements under flat arch heads. Hipped roof has central dormer. Central stone stack.

{3} The dairy was built in 1786 of ironstone with pyramid roof; it is situated by the Round Oval Lake.

{4} The dairy built in 1786 is one of the most important survivors from a group of eighteenth century tiled dairies put up for aristocrats on their country estates; it has an original Wedgewood tiled interior, mostly in white but with some decoration in the form of a trailing ivy motif, with fittings also by Wedgewood. The dairy was erected for Lavinia, Lady Spencer, on her return from France, where she had seen Marie Antoinette's dairy at Versailles under construction.

{5} Internally the dairy has folding panelled timber screens. The south side of the building is enclosed by a tall ironstone wall forming a courtyard which is paved with bricks set in a herringbone pattern and includes some derelict stalls.

{7} Undated photo, also four photos dated "pre 1984";
