Early 19th century red brick walls enclosing canal

{1} Wall enclosing canal. Early C19. Variegated red brick, English bond, some stone coping. Originally joined to Grand Union Canal to east, now isolated. Originally the canal extended into the Magazine area and a short distance beyond, since filled in, and the canal basin between east and west gatehouses had a central cross arm to allow barges to turn, which has since been reduced.

{3} Canal walls, early C19th. Site upgraded to II*. Site underused for many years and in poor condition. Some initial repairs already underway. Awaiting comprehensive scheme for use of this site as a whole. Outline scheme agreed at Public Enquiry. Canal walls in poor condition.

{4} Work conducted on 3m section of canal wharf wall within barracks by Waterway Recovery Group. Section of wall examined and coping stones numbered, recorded and removed, wall discovered to be in a good state of repair.Objects found included two rifle barrels (?bent by fire), some metal rods and metal backed paper labels stencilled with various parts descriptions (eg rifles, normal butt).

{5} Canal walls, early C19. Part of an extraordinary military complex built during the Napoleonic era. Brickwork is falling away, copings missing, damaged by vegetation growth, in need of repointing. Site underused for many years and in poor condition. Outline scheme for reuse of site agreed at Public Inquiry in 2000 but has never been implemented. The Weedon Depot complex was sold in early 2013 and the site is now home to various businesses. It is anticipated that a fabric condition survey will be
prepared to inform priorities for action and establish costs for repair.
