Full Description

{1} Row of 2 cottages, formerly 3. Late C17th. Coursed ironstone rubble and squared ironstone, thatch roof, brick end and ridge stacks. 2 storeys. 6-window range. Central plank door with chamfered lintel extending over 3-light casement to right, a similar window to left. Left third - Western Cottage - has old plank door with timber lintel flanked by 3-light casement windows with timber lintels, that to right a re-used spine beam and extending almost to door to left. The right end ground floor front wall has been removed probably in late C18 or early C19, the superstructure supported on two tree trunks to give a rustic cottage-orne-style porch; a brick wall within and 2-light casement window with timber lintel, a similar 2-light window to left of porch. 2-light first floor windows with eyebrow dormers. Interior: Rose Cottage has stop-chamfered spine beams, stone-flagged floors and 2 open fireplaces, with chamfered bressumers, one fireplace with bread oven. Western Cottage noted as having similar spine beams and open fireplace with bressumer and bread oven. Rose Cottage has a "built-in" VR post box.

{3} A spark in the chimney breast caused a fire at these cottages that resulted in the loss of both roofs, two thirds of both properties being severely damaged and 60% suffering sever structural damage. Photo.
