Building record 953/27/4 - Former hand-sewn shoemakers workshops at bottom of garden of Nos. 51 and 53 East Street

{3} These workshops are thought to have been built by a local co-operative society shortly after 1884. A two-storeyed workshop was built for each of the five houses, arranged in two pairs and a singleton. Each incorporates two doorways: a narrow doorway serving a privy on the ground floor and a wider doorway opening onto a stair to the first floor workshop. Each workshop has a large two-light window in the north wall, and a stack (placed centrally on the paired workshops) on the south wall. Heating was provided by stoves. Perhaps at the same time Nos. 55-61 were provided with single-storeyed outbuildings comprising a privy and coalshed.
In 1898, judging by dates on the south gables, the workshops belonging to Nos 45-9 were extended by the addition of single-storeyed workshops (one singleton, one pair) on the south side. Each has an entrance in the south gable, a single large two-light window with a sill of chamfered blue bricks, and a stack abutting the original workshop stack. Similar paired workshops were also added to the privy/coalshed ranges belonging to Nos. 55-61.
