Full Description

{1} Tunnel entrance. Early C19. James Barnes engineer. Red brick parapet patched with blue brick and partly rendered, stone coping. The arch is framed by flat pilasters. Flanking walls partly rendered brick, curve forward slightly ending with flat buttresses. Blocked opening with rendered lintel in centre of parapet. Brick string course at base of parapet. The tunnel was opened in 1814 and is 1528 yards long.

{3} Opened in 1814. 1397m long, brick lined, without towpath or ventilation shafts. There are 10 distinct mounds of excavated material from the construction of the tunnel, in a straight line between the two tunnel mouths. One mound is immediately to the north of the Crick to Watford road (SP 592710).
