Building record 403/8/1 - The Village Farmhouse

A 16th-century house, remodelled and enlarged in the 17th and early 19th centuries. It comprises a T-plan with 16th-century gabled wing running east to west projecting forward to right of main entrance. Squared coursed ironstone and coursed rubble, partly timber framed the upper floor rendered externally. Listed.

Squared coursed ironstone and coursed rubble, partly timber framed the upper floor rendered externally. 2 storeys and attic; one bay. C17 extension adjoining to south (left). Coursed ironstone rubble, 2 storeys and attic; 2 bays. C19 extension to right (north) of 016 cross wing, blue and red chequer brick, 2 storeys; one bay. Artificial stone slate roof. Brick and rendered stacks. Entrance in right bay of south wing has re-used 517 four-centred stone arch and C20 plank door. 3-light transomed casement window with wood lintel to left. 2-light casement window with wood lintel in left bay. 3-light casement window with wood lintel in right bay in the first floor and similar 2-light window to left. Cornice rebuilt in brick. Coped gable end to left. Cross wing has main post of timber framing in angle adjoining south wing and part of diagonal brace is exposed on the first floor. C17 one-light stone framed window to ground floor and C20 three-light casement window to first floor. Gable end has window with moulded stone frame. Square hood and 3-light casement on the ground floor. 3-light casement window with rendered frame to first floor and 4-pane window with moulded frame to attic. C19 extension to north has 3-light casement window in flat arched brick frame. Rear of cross wing has 4-light casement window in C17 moulded stone frame to ground floor. 2-light casement window in rendered frame to first floor and gabled attic dormer. South wing has re-used C17 stone doorway with 4-centred arch, now blocked with C20 window inserted in the blocking. C17 stone framed one-light window to left also re-used. Interior: ground floor room has spine beam with ogee chamfer stops and sandstone fireplace with 4-centred moulded arch. Other ground floor rooms have stop-chamfered spine beams and joists. Cross wing retains much of the original roof structure with the main rafters in a scissor truss at the apex. Timber frame with brick infill is exposed internally.
