Building record 4156/1/5 - Curtain Wall, Gates & Gatepiers Attached to & c.50m North & West of Rockingham Castle

{1} Curtain wall, gates and gatepiers. Probably following line of C11th outer wall, mainly C17th and C19th. Limestone ashlar base with top courses of squared coursed ironstone with ashlar coping and ball finials at intervals. Ashlar buttresses at intervals. West face at end of yew walk has C18th ashlar gatepiers linked by wrought iron gate with overthrow and leaf decoration. Flight of stone steps attached to left of steps. North-west corner and position of gates are said to be sites of towers in curtain wall.

{2} Curtain wall. Probably following line of 11th century outer wall. But dating mainly from 17th and 19th century. Also gates and gatepiers.
