Building record 4156/1/7 - Gatehouse to Medieval Motte/Wall c.10m South of Garden Front of Rockingham Castle

{1} Wall. C17/C18th probably with earlier origins. Squared coursed and limestone ashlar. (Rockingham Castle garden is included in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*).

{3} Access to the motte from the north bailey was gained through a gatehouse or barbican, the foundations of which can be traced on the outer edge of the ditch. The gatehouse had an upper room with garderobe.

[SMR Note: there appears to be some confusion with the Listed Buildings records as 4156/1/7 appears to represent the site of the medieval gateway for the motte, but any surviving wall from this should not be C17th/18th. The Listed Building record could apply to the wall 4156/1/8, but this needs checking on the ground. Both features appear on modern OS mapping.]
