Full Description

{1} Shop formerly public house and coaching inn. Early C18, altered C19 and C20. Coursed squared limestone, plain-tile roof, brick end stacks. 2-storey, 5-window range. 2-unit plan. Central blocked door. Pair of canted bay windows to ground floor. 12-pane sash windows to 1st floor with wood lintels. Storey band and hipped roof dormer. 2-storey, 2-window extension to rear right, with present entrance; C20 door with wood lintel. Interior has chamfered spine beams.

{3} Analysis, plan, sections and photographs. The building is a three-bay, two-storey, stone built house or inn of the early/mid 17th century. Towards the end of the century a maltings was added at the rear, and by 1727 it was an inn known as the Roebuck owned by William Holman, described in his will as a maltster. Stabling was extended in the 18th century, its name had changed to the Reindeer Inn by 1804, and the buildings had take on their present form before the 1880s.
Interestingly, the original building had been laid out using the basic unit of measurement used for medieval architecture, the rod, pole or perch. It measures two rods wide by one rod deep, which suggests it may be a rebuild of an earlier medieval house.
