Summary

Mid 18th century garden temple in Horton Park. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and has a lead and slate roof with a tetrastyle portico approached by three steps. During the late 19th century a brick built house was constructed incorporates part of the temple, forming a T-plan.

Full Description

{1} The Temple has a fine Ionic portico carrying a pulvinated frieze and pediment, probably early Georgian. A farmhouse stands to its left.

{2} The New Temple is attributed to Garrett and likely to date to the 1740s or 50s; it is now converted so that the portico forms the centre of a larger dwelling.

{3} Garden temple and attached house. Mid C18th extended late C19th. Limestone ashlar, lead and slate roof, brick ridge stack. The temple faces the former park of Horton Hall (the hall was demolished in 1936) with the site of house to the south-west. A tetrastyle portico is approached by three moulded stone steps. Ionic order. Pediment and full entablature with pulvinated frieze. Back wall of portico has central double-leaf, part-glazed door with moulded stone surround and pulvinated frieze. Blank attic window above with moulded stone surround. Shallow segmental-headed niches to ground floor left and right and circular niches above, either side of window. There is a large late C19th house to rear incorporating temple, of white brick with stone dressings, and forming T-plan.
