Full Description

{3} Standing structure. Medieval/post medieval stocks and whipping post. In their present form they date from 1835. They were last used for punishment in 1833. NCC Guardianship site.

{4} Stocks. 1835 with older origins. Timber with ironwork. Woodwork was renewed 1835, ironwork may be older. The last man to be placed in the stocks was William Baucott in 1837 for being drunk and ill-treating his wife. (Little Houghton Coronation Scrapbook, 1953.)

{8} The stocks consist of one tall upright hinge post (1305mm high) with a wrist-iron, staple and padlock, and one short upright hasp post (160mm deep). The hinge post has a round lead-capped head which was added in about 1952 replacing an original metal cap. At about the same time, the hinge post was also reinforced on opposing sides with two metal straps. Also on the hinge post are two wrist manacles. The manacle at he front still has an old rusted padlock. Between the uprights are two much weathered leg boards, containing four well worn ankle holes. The uppermost legboard is capped with a metal top band which was added as a repair in 1952. Also added about the same time were a series of metal clasps which secure the top and bottom boards together. Otherwise, much of the ironwork may be original. The stocks cannot be dated with certainty but the earliest reference to them in is 1833.
