Full Description
{1} The trial excavation uncovered late medieval remains sealed beneath a sequence of soils typical of a well-established garden area. The late medieval remains comprised a number of pits and a ditch, indicative of backyard activity. The pits contained animal bone, charred grain and pottery, and may have been used as cess / refuse pits. The ditch may have demarkated an earlier boundary between two plots of land, before the development of Parson Lathams hospital in the 17th century. An undated gully, sealed by the layer into which the medieval features were cut, pre-dates the early 15th century and may be as early as the second half of the 12th century.
