Abstract/Summary
A trial excavation and desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of proposed residential development. The land was known to have been part of the gardens adjoining Parson Latham's Hospital since the early 17th century. Prior to this the land was probably used as a 'backyard' area. The excavation confirmed this revealing a sequence of late medieval remains, such as pits and a ditch, sealed beneath a sequence of soils typical of a well-established garden. Residual pottery sherds indicate Saxon/ Saxo/Norman activity in the area and a shallow pit and a burnt area, possibly a hearth, were Romano-British in date.
