Full Description
{1}Mat making and rush basket weaving was a small cottage industry which operated from houses and barns in Duck End (now demolished). There was one mat maker listed in the 1777 militia list and in 1891 the census shows 2 manufacturers and 6 workers involved in mat making. No surviving physical evidence of his industry has been identified.
Mat making was another industry within Wollaston, prevalent in the Duck End area, but this was in decline by 1891, although rush baskets continued to be made into the 20th century.
David Hall suggests there may have been Lime kilns at Duck End during the late 18th century.
