Full Description
{1}In 1893 The Fountain Coffee House was built on the corner of Newton Road and Council Street. Barry Robinson notes that it 'contained two Coffee Bars, a Reading Room supplied with all the literature of the day, and upstairs had a large billiard room, also a games room furnished with a bagatelle board and other accessories where visitors could sit and enjoy a pleasant game. It also contains living rooms for the caretaker and sleeping accommodation for travellers. At the rear stabling accommodation is provided, there was a spacious lawn for tennis, and other outdoor amusements.' This building was later utilised as a shoe factory (E J Pitts) , but the building has since been pulled down and replaced by modern shop units.
There were five tennis courts in the village- one at the coffee house all of which have now disappeared.
