Full Description
{1} Evidence for late Saxon and medieval occupation comprising several phases of activity was revealed immediately adjacent to the application area. Interpretation of the earlier phases suggested that they were aligned on a 'lost' lane, 'Lewnyslane' connecting Woolmonger Street and Kingswell Street, which is known from documentary sources to have existed from at least the later 13th century, but to have been blocked up prior to 1504. The line of this lane, as suggested in the excavation report, runs through the central part of the application area. More recently, an alternative location for the 'lost' lane, based on documentary evidence, has been put forward by T C Welsh.
