Full Description
{1} It was not until the second half of the C19th that the area was fully developed, with the construction of the Kingswell Terrace, later to be replaced by the Bassett-Lowke toy factory, and the infilling of partially developed plots.
The buried topsoil and subsoil horizons recorded beneath the layers of demolition material and modern soil accumulation in Trenches 1 and 2 may represent remnants of the original land surface. These deposits, which were heavily disturbed, contained late post-medieval and modern pottery sherds. This is consistent with the extension of the Kingswell Street frontage to the south in the C19th and the use of the land for garden plots. The overlying layer of darker soil, which contained quantities of darker soil, which contained quantities of domestic refuse and some industrial waste, is probably associated with the later development of Kingswell Terrace and the increasingly industrial character of the neighbourhood in the later C19th.
