Full Description

{1} Parts of two stone buildings (foundations and a floor) were found dating to this period.
Building 1 was a structure of possibly two bays, originally built on limestone rubble foundations, with its longer axis aligned roughly east-west, coterminous with the present axis of the property boundaries and with its northern wall respecting the former tenement boundary. It had been substantially grubbed out, especially as it continued to the south and west. In its remaining form, a square, derelict structure, it had been demolished as recently as the 1980's. It was shown as a small square structure on 1970s Ordance Survey maps of the town suggesting prior demolition of any potential eastern end of the building. The earliest cartographic reference to the building was in 1885, showing a small square structure. By 1922 an ancillary extension possibly a pen had been added to the west.
Building 2 was revealed by evidence of a rammed mortar sub-floor and an east-west parallel to the main boundary wall forming the remnant of a 19th century structure that had originally been attached to the main boundary wall. The foundation was formed of large sub-rectangular limestone blocks with remnants of an orange sand-based mortar. The remains of a rammed mortar sub-floorpartially survived btween the main walls. The layer slumped westwards into an infilled void, (a possible cellar that continued beyond the site to the east). The building is shown for the first time on the 1885 OS 1st Edition map forming part of a building formerly present to the rear of No.28 High Street.
