Full Description

{1} Two new villa style residences were built separately to the main asylum block in the 1950's. Although designed to be less institutional than the main asylum, which was achieved to a degree on the exterior with an appearance of domestic houses in style, the interiors did not differ significantly from what had gone before. The exteriors were plain and un-ornamented. Surviving records suggested that the building housed long stay patients, at least in its latter life. The Grafton Lodge was the eastern building of the two. Eden Lodge was identical in plan. Both buildings had two floors, and with exceptions each side of the buildings were built as a mirror image with a cutting plane north-south across the centre of the building. Eden Lodge had in its latter years been used by the Sir Gordon Roberts College of Nursing and Midwifery, nad had remained largely unchanged, but part of the ground floor had been rendered inaccessible. The Grafton Lodge had been used by the Oxford Institute, which had altered the layout on the first floor with the addition of extra rooms; this building had repeatedly suffered fire damage during late summer/autumn 2002.
