Full Description

{1} Photographs.

{2} 16 High Street Rushton has been used as both a post office and a bakery at different times. The building has been considerably re-modelled during this century and retains few features of historic merit.
The bakery itself is of considerable interest. The oven for the bakery was built on to the rear of the historic building and is a separate structure. The oven is constructed of brick with a stone facing, above the oven itself is a storage space with a small window. It is unlikely that this area could have been used whilst the oven was operational (due to intense heat). The original frontage of the oven survives ('Improved Coal Oven. T Reynolds Iron and Brass Founder, Harrowden') and is accessed via the main body of the house. The flooring in this area of the building is of brick construction. Alterations were clearly made to the north east wall of the property with the insertion of doors at ground and first floor level. The first floor door would appear to have been a taking in door, possibly for a grain store or similar above the bakery. There is a ladder between the two floors and a number of features such as trap door etc
The main alteration relating to the use of the building as a post office were the insertion of the two bay windows on the ground floor and the alteration of the circulation space with the insertion of temporary panels.
