Summary

A Royal Observer Corps monitoring post. The site was built as part of an extensive network of posts designed to confirm and report hostile aircraft and nuclear attacks on the United Kingdom. It was constructed after World War II and closed in September 1991. At the time of the Defence of Britain survey the site was found to have been destroyed. It was located underground on Borough Hill (public open space) 10 yards west of the concrete base of an old BBC transformer building and 200 yards north of the current BBC compound.

Full Description

{1}" When the Newnham ROC (see 8137/0/1) went underground, a bunker was built on Borough Hill in the middle of the BBC transmitting station at SP587626 and remained in use until the stand-down of the ROC in July 1991. All structures remaining above ground level were demolished prior to the sale of the site to Daventry District Council." Below ground parts of the site are believed to remain in situ;

{2} Underground ROC site opened at an unknown date. Closed Sept 1991. Sub. Brit. Visit 29.11.1998. Described as demolished-one year after closure. Lay 200 yards N of BBC Compound;
