Full Description

{1}Uniserial barbed point of antler and a Lyngby axe of antler found at approximately SP 875 625 (Grendon).

{2} The uniserial barbed point was identified as being of the type made and used by hunters living in the early post-glacial (Flandrian) or Mesolithic period. It appears to be unfinished since the top barb has not been fully cut out, the barbs are not as deep or hooked as in other examples and the shaft is still rough in places. The 'Lyngby' axe consists of the main beam of a reindeer antler about 24" long with part of the brow tine remaining. The distal end of the main beam has been removed apparently by sawing. The barbed point had been radiocarbon dated. Two other worked fragments included a small bovid horn-tip c 6" long severed by cutting around and a red deer antler c 12" long, showing an annular groove about half-way along, presumably the initial step in making a point by the groove and splinter technique

{3} Results for the dating of the 'Lyngby' axe.
