Building record 1160/0/58 - Super Sausage Café, St Andrews Road

Constructed as Slipper Baths by Northampton Corporation between 1924 and 1938. Locally listed building.

{1} The Super Sausage Café on the corner of Spencer Bridge Road and St Andrews Road has design components which suggest that this brick-built building may have functioned as WWII era first aid post. The design of the latter is as featured in The War Office Protection Against Gas and Air Raids Pamphlet No 3 Passive Air Defence (1939 provisional). Armishaw notes the use of twin entrances with single exit layout as typical of such posts; photos.

{3} Painted sign on the east-facing elevation of a single-storey building at St Andrews Road, on the corner of Spencer Bridge Road. The sign comprises white capital lettering on a red rectangular background and bears the inscription 'SUPER SAUSAGE CAFETERIA --ENTRANCE--'. The sign is poorly legible due to pollution and staining. The structure has a slate roof and is currently in use as a café and restaurant, having previously served as the Northampton Corporation Slipper Baths. The sign appears to be painted onto a plastic sheet affixed to the exterior brickwork rather than directly onto the building fabric.
