Full Description

{1} There is a defence bunker under the fire station in Wellingborough but this may date from the "cold war" period.

{3} Reference on p.228 to the Cold War era local emergency centre being located under the Wellingborough fire and ambulance centre. According to McCamley, when the centre was planned in 1962 a decision was taken to incorporate a Civil Defence control centre in the basement, accessed by steps within the fire station. "Much of the original equipment has been stripped out in recent years and the premises are now used for storage for the fire brigade."

{4} Opened in 1962. Constructed in the basement of the station, the CD HQ boasted a staff of sixty, an air filtration plant, electricity generator, and wireless communications. Photographic survey of building and explanatory notes.
