Full Description

{1} Modern aerial photograph coverage reveals possible archaeological features within the northern 50m or so of an arable field. The features are centred on approx. SP 5360 3244. The features comprise at least 5 dark soil discolourations; approx. round in form and with an estimated diameter ranging between 10 and 20m.
The unpublished OS map of 1814 and the first edtition of the OS 1:10,560 plan indicate that the woodland known as Smanhill Covert then extended across the area of the soilmarks. The origin of woodland hereabouts has not been determined but the possibility is raised that the soilmarks relate to former woodland use and might speculatively result from charcoal production.
