Full Description

{2} Linear banks and ditches. Earthworks lie just within the eastern side of The Great Park. RCHME equate this with Mon 2449. The longer, northern section consists of a bank 12m wide and up to 1.5m high, with a continuous ditch on the east side, also 12m wide. The ditch is up to 1m deep. There are three gaps through the earthwork. The central one takes a small stream, but the gaps either side of this are more complex. The gap to the north has a ditch on the west side of its bank and curving into it, while the south one has markedly out-turned flanks. Neither carries a stream. The northern end of the earthwork extends a little way into a field which is now ploughed, and may originally have extended further northwards. A cropmark visible on the ground may represent the continuation of the ditch. At the south end the bank ends with a short, sharp corner. The southern section is shorter and less well preserved. On the north side of the valley the bank has been reduced by modern cultivation to a scarp under 1m high, and the ditch is only just traceable. South of the stream a short section of mutilated bank survives but is cut short at its southern end by medieval and later ploughing, and may once have extended further. The two features were probably once continuous, but their date and purpose are unknown. They are not considered to have been dams to retain water as they extend too far up the valley sides. Earthwork plan.

{3} Fieldname: Splash Meadow.
