Summary

Earthwork remains of a Medieval moat; all that survives is the north-east arm of the moat, it is in poor condition being partly rubbish filled and mutilated. There are no indications of the remainder of the moat. Wakeley Lodge is unoccupied and derelict.

Full Description

{1} Moat, apparently complete in the 19th century, but now only the north east side of the ditch around a small island remains in a mutilated state.

{2} Only the north east arm survives; mutilated and rubbish filled. TL01148759.

{4} Village of Churchfield comprised two manors, one owned by freeholder of Stoke Doyly, which consisted in 1465 of one messuage and 60a. Of land. C.1720 "mansion house", with "Chapel Close" adjacent. This perhaps is the present Wakerley Lodge, where moat visible in 19th century. (Its remains are still shown on OS 6" 1958, immediately to the NW of the lodge, at centred TL 01128758)

{5} Incorrectly identified with Churchfield Manor which is in Oundle township.

{6} The moat was not located in field survey of 1996. The site of the enclosure is in an arable field now under root crop. There is no sign of any surviving earthwork. Derelict farmhouse and barn - provisionally dated to late 18th century. Known as Wakefield Lodge on Bryant's map of 1846; not shown on Eyres map of 1779.

{7} Centred at TL 01148759 is the north-east arm of a home-stead moat; it is in poor condition being partly rubbish filled and mutilated. There are no indications of the remainder of the moat. Wakeley Lodge is unoccupied and derelict. See annotated 1:2500 revision.
