Summary

Cropmarks show a ring ditch and an enclosure. Roman and Iron Age pottery, firebars, a pit containing kiln debris, a bronze pin, bronze brooch and a glass bead indicate a settlement site. A polished flint axe and worked flints have been found.

Full Description

{1} (SP 828599) Cropmark. (Nothing visible on available Air photos OS 1965).

{2} SP 82855990 Surface finds since 1960 include part of a polished flint axe, worked flints, Iron Age pottery, Roman pottery, firebars, bronze objects and a glass bead. A rubbish pit excavated in 1960 contained kiln debris (1st or 2nd century material).

{3} Brafield, Spring Banks (SP 828599). Bronze pin with knobbed head and a piece of bone with a decorative worked end, probably for use as a stamp. Also a bronze brooch with pierced catch-plate, Collingwood type A

{4} SP 828599 Roman finds in 1972 were a bronze pin, a bronze brooch, and a piece of bone with a decorative worked end, probably for use as a stamp.

[5} Iron Age and Roman Settlement and Kiln (SP 828599); close to the N parish boundary, on limestone and clay at 91 m. above OD. Excavation in 1960 on a pit showed that it contained Roman kiln debris. Air
photographs (in NMR) show a number of indistinct cropmarks in the area, including a sub-rectangular enclosure.

{7} There are no surface indications of the cropmark and no finds were made during investigation.
